Can you afford to foster kittens?
Besides the emotional risk of fostering kittens, there are other things to consider before you decide to foster kittens. First of all, with a new per/month expense for your budget, can you even afford to foster kittens? Keep in mind that kittens eat different food to adult cats. And you usually have to buy kitten soft food and kitten cat food.
But even though I quit my job, the joys kittens give and the knowledge that I’m doing something worthwhile, make the expense of fostering kittens next-to-nothing. Plus, the good news is when you’re fostering, you usually don’t have any vets bills because your shelter takes care of it.
It’s alwyas a great idea to go into something new with a plan and a reasonable knowledge of what to expect. My partner and I drew up a ‘pets’ category for our budget.
How to budget for Kitten expenses each month:
kitty litter $10.00
Soft kitty food: $20.00
Hard kitty food: $30
Kitty toys: $2.00 (optional) — get them at a $2.00 shop and you’ll save heaps!
So that’s a potential expense of $62.00/month. But as cliched as it is, having the kittens in the house and watching them play together is priceless.
Even though I recommend you buy cheaper cat toys (in fact, I make most of mine!), for the sake of the smell in your house, I do not recommend going ‘cheap’ on the kitty litter!
